Procedures/Policies
Classroom Duties
Each student will be responsible for him/herself. He/she will keep his/her general area clean & organized.
Classroom Jobs
Each week students will be given new classroom jobs. All students are expected to participate in keeping the learning environment clean and comfortable.
Pencil Sharpening
Pencils for classroom use will be sharpened daily. Students who wish to use their own personal pencils may sharpen them before and/or after school. This procedure will reduce classroom disruption. Portable pencil sharpeners with tops that catch the shavings may be used during class time.
Bathroom Use
Only one male & one female may use the bathroom at a time. The students will use a bathroom pass. The students may not use the bathroom when the teacher is giving a lesson or when someone is presenting. *Note to parents: Please let me know if your child has special needs concerning bathroom use.
Drinking Fountain Use
The students will not leave the room for the sole purpose of using the drinking fountain. Students may bring leak-proof clear water bottles (for water only) to keep at the foot of their desk. Misuse of the privilege will result in loss of this privilege. Examples of misuse: bringing beverages other than water, excessive spillage, &/or high frequency of bathroom visits due to constant drinking that create disruption. Please have your child bring his/her water bottle home for frequent cleaning.
Lining Up
The students will have pre-determined places in line so that they may line up quickly & efficiently. This will be beneficial in case of an emergency.
Independent Work Time
This time is provided for students to get their work done. Students are expected to work quietly during this time. The teacher will do his/her best to meet student needs at this time for example: provide quick tutoring, checking work, answering questions, and time assistance. Again, this is a quiet time for students to concentrate and talking will be prohibited without teacher permission. (See consequences).
Absences
Parents or students will need to request missed materials for absences on the day of the return or during the absence. Your child will have one day for each missed day to make up missed material. After that, work WILL NOT be accepted. Also, if your child will be absent for several days, you may want to consider having their work picked up from school. If you want your child’s work the same day, please contact the office in the morning to allow us time to assemble his/her work and expect to pick up the work at the end of the day. There may be days in which we will not have time to get work together until the following day.
Homework
Your child will bring home his/her packet each Thursday. If there is no school on Thursday, packets will be sent home on Wednesday or Friday. All homework is due the following Thursday unless otherwise specified in the homework packets. If there is no homework parents will be notified in the weekly newsletter. If your child is absent it is his/her responsibility to ask me about make up work (See absences.)
Late Work
Late work will generally not be accepted. Due to the nature of work at the 3rd/4th grade levels, it is important that deadlines are met. This practice teaches the students responsibility and gives the teachers the ability to review and correct all papers in an organized and efficient fashion. It is at the teacher’s discretion if he/she chooses to accept late assignments at partial credit.
Student Numbers
Each student will be given a number. This number will need to be written on all papers. This will help save time distributing papers so that the class may focus on more important issues. It also helps us to see who is missing work or does not have a name on their paper (to give reminders.)
Names on Papers
If a paper can be identified within a few moments (number, handwriting, the only paper missing, etc.) the student will be given full credit – only by teacher choice. If the paper is unidentifiable without a search the student will receive no credit for the assignment. The paper will be placed in the no name bin.
Projects
All instructions for homework projects will be sent home on Thursdays. Instructions, grading rubrics, & due dates will be included.
Drill & Practice
The students will be expected to practice basic skills (ex. spelling words, multiplication skills) at home. Information about which skills are being covered in class, and when they will be covered, will be given in the weekly newsletter. Note to parents: Please set aside 5-10 minutes at least 3-5 times a week for each basic skill on which your child is working. Guidelines will be given in the Thursday packets.
Reading Homework
Students will be expected to read for 120 minutes a week in 3rd grade and 150 minutes a week in 4th grade. Note to parents: You may want to help your child budget his/her reading time.
Writing Homework
3rd graders will be expected to write at home 3 times a week for 15 minutes. 4th graders will be expected to write at home 3 times a week for 20 minutes.
With reading, writing, and other homework, your 3rd grader will spend approximately 30-40 minutes a night working if time is budgeted properly. Your 4th grader will spend approximately 45-60 minutes a night. Projects for both grades should add an additional 15-30 minutes a night resulting in no more than 1 hour, 30 minutes at any given evening for fourth grade and no more than 1 hour, 10 minutes for 3rd grade. Be careful when planning.
Assessments
Progress Reports
The teacher will mail/send home progress reports for all students. The purpose of this is so that all students can make decisions about their goals and still have enough time to make a change. These reports will be discussed with the students before they are sent home. Students will be informed about their grades throughout the year and given opportunities to improve if needed. Improvements are their choice and responsibility. Parents are encouraged to discuss these goals with their child. (See extra credit.)
Projects
Rubrics will be sent home for all take home projects. Rubrics will be explained to students for in class projects. Parents may request these at any time. If a student does not turn in a project, he/she will receive a failing grade for that project. Please keep in mind that projects are graded with a higher percentage than other work and will greatly affect the student’s overall grade.
Presentations
Presentations may also be graded using rubrics.
Tests
Tests will be graded by the percent.
Homework
Practice homework is for the students’ benefit & will be graded ü+ for completed quality work. If a student does not complete the practice homework at home, he/she will receive a failing grade for that assignment. Other homework will be graded by the percent. The scale is located in the TMAACS handbook.
(If the teacher allows a student to redo a homework assignment, it must be turned in the next day & will automatically receive a 1 grade reduction. This is at the teacher’s discretion.) Students do receive credit for signed math/reading slips.
Portfolio
Each student will be responsible for updating a reflective portfolio. This portfolio will include favorite pieces of student work, teacher picks, & handwriting samples. The students will reflect on all information contained in the portfolio. This will help the students to take control of their own learning as well as enabling them to see their own academic growth.
Extra Credit
Extra credit assignments are provided throughout the year using teacher discretion. These assignments may be lengthy and time consuming. It is in the student’s best interest to complete and turn in primary assignments and to get work checked by the teacher before it is turned in (they may do this during independent work time.) Extra credit assignments are not set up to significantly improve a failing grade.
Email Grade Notification
Whenever a 4th grade student receives a D or below on an assignment, we will email a notification. The assignment may not be redone. The notification is to keep you aware of your child’s academics as to plan accordingly for the future. If three emails are sent in the same subject area then it may be an area of concern and a meeting may be necessary. Note: Failing grades for large projects will greatly affect grades.
I have read and understand the Student Discipline Plan.
