Dear Parents, Thursday, February 9, 2012
Last week the Groundhog saw his shadow. We will see if the prediction of six more weeks of winter holds true. Make sure your child has appropriate clothes for whatever the weather might be.
CLASSROOM NOTES:
Class Supplies: Thank for all the donations. Feel free to donate items whenever you want.
Book Orders: New book orders were sent home last week. Please have your order in by February 16, 2012. I have selected more catalogs online and only sent home a couple. Remember when you order books we automatically get free class points that I use to order books for our classroom library.
Book It: February forms went home last week. This includes the “Monthly Minutes Calendar” and “A Super Reader’s Book Review”. Make sure you have both forms at home and are completing them. Your child’s goal should be at least 400 minutes each month. That is 20 minutes 5 nights a week. Please take this opportunity to have your child read to you, you read to them and discuss what has been read. February forms are due by March 1. If you finish the forms early, please hand in.
Science Fair: Science Fair will be the week of April 9th this year and it is mandatory to participate in second grade. All topics must be submitted by today, Thursday, February 9th. It is important to have a variety of collections on display so the sooner you submit your topic to me the better. I may ask you to choose a new topic if there are already a couple of students with your topic. Projects are not to be brought in until Monday, April 9th after school and may be taken home Thursday, April 12th. Projects from last year may not be resubmitted! Judges will award a ribbon for Best of Show and Honorable Mention. I will also grade the projects but this is separate from the judges.
Chinese New Year Celebration: Our class had a wonderful time celebrating the Chinese New Year last Friday. Thank you to Ms. Brown for organizing all the activities. Thank you to Ms. LaFontaine, Mr. Lynch and Ms. McFarland for coming in and helping out. The kids had a great time and learned a lot in the process.
Valentine’s Day: The class will celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th with a little party in the afternoon (2:30-3:30). Students will exchange valentines at that time. We will make Valentines Bags at school so don’t worry about sending in any type of container. If you would like to send in a special treat for your child to share with the class that would be fine. I have a sign up on the back board.
Important Dates:
February 10, 2012: Fundraiser Dress Down Day $1.00
February 17 and February 20, 2012: No School for Students
February 24, 2012: CREW
Weekly Homework: Attached handout Syllable and Repeating Pattern. Due by next Thursday, February 16, 2012. Remember to continue collecting items for your Science Fair Topic. Continue working on Hundreds Day Project due February 22, 2012.
Best Wishes,
Mrs. Simpson
